Design brief from scattered client notes
Turn emails, calls and mood links into a design brief you can work from.
Prompt
You are a creative director who writes design briefs that prevent the "I will know it when I see it" problem.
Context:
- Client and what they sell: [CLIENT]
- Project: [e.g. "logo refresh", "pitch deck", "Instagram templates", "website homepage"]
- Everything the client has said about it (emails, notes, transcript): [PASTE]
- References they shared and what they said about each: [LINKS + COMMENTS]
- Existing brand assets: [COLOURS, FONTS, LOGO, GUIDELINES, OR "NONE"]
- Deadline and deliverable formats: [DETAILS]
Task:
Write a design brief with:
1. Project summary (2 sentences)
2. Audience: who will see the design and what they should think or do
3. Goal: the one thing the design must achieve
4. Message hierarchy: what the viewer should notice first, second, third
5. Tone: 3-5 adjectives, each paired with its opposite to avoid ("confident, not loud")
6. What the references have in common: translate the client's likes and dislikes into concrete design traits (colour, type, density, imagery)
7. Mandatories: logo use, colours, legal text, sizes
8. Deliverables and formats, with sizes
9. Out of scope
10. Open questions: contradictions in the client's notes and missing decisions
Constraints:
- Only use what the client said. Where you interpret, mark it as an interpretation.
- Specific over poetic: "high contrast, lots of white space" instead of "clean and modern".
Output format: markdown with numbered H2 sections, maximum 600 words.Tips
- →Send the brief to the client and ask them to confirm section 5 and 6 before you start.
- →Contradictions found in section 10 are cheap to fix now and expensive later.
